Executive Summary - A subprime card that has the usual high fees and rates. Though there are other cards with higher fees (upfront, annual and monthly maintenance), we would still recommend shopping around for other cards that have lower fees and rates (the Credit One would be an alternative), or consider secured cards.

Plains Commerce Bank is a bank out of South Dakota which began as the Bank of Hoven in 1931. The Total Visa Card was issued by Plains Commerce Bank as a card for people with no credit or bad credit, as a means to not only have a credit card but to establish and improve on their credit in the meantime. Unfortunately, regardless of the long bank's long history in South Dakota, the Total Visa Card is not the greatest card to use to assist in that process.

Fees - Because Total Visa is a sub-prime card targeted at those with not so good credit, they can of course get away with an obscene amount of fees because people who are trying to rebuild their credit histories will pay them. Once you get approved for this card, there is an account set-up fee of $56.00. There is also a program fee of $96.00. The annual fee is $48.00 and there is also a monthly participating fee of $8.00 (which works out to $96.00). This totals $296.00 just to have the card for the first year.

For the second year onwards, the total fees per year works out to $48 + $96 = 144. Though not the highest (that award might well go to the imagine card), it is pretty high.

The APR is a fixed rate at 19.92% for both purchases and cash advances, which isn't the highest APR that we've seen with sub-prime cards, but considering all of the other fees that are involved, it's still pretty high. The average daily balance method is used to calculate your monthly interest charges. The grace period is 25 days, which is longer than the standard 20 days that most credit cards give.

Total Visa Card Comparison With Other Sub-Prime Cards - Way back before the 2008 financial crisis, there were lots of other similar card to this one. Today, however, there are only two other similar competitors as the rest of them have been fined by the FTC and closed down or bought over and no longer issued (like Orchard Bank).

Although all of the cards have additional fees for carrying the cards, First Premier's fees include a security deposit of $95.00 which is refundable, an annual fee of $75.00 the first year and then $45.00 annually thereafter and a monthly servicing fee which is billed at $6.50 per month for a total of $78.00 annually. These fees total a little lower than Total Visa Card's fees however, the APR on the First Premier card is 36%.

The other card to compare with is the Credit One Bank Visa with Gas Rewards. The annual fee ranges from $35 to $75 and there is none of that one time processing or application fee. Compared to the other cards, this one is the most reasonable in terms of fees. Furthermore, you can earn reward points for gasoline spending (rewards are rare for subprime cards).

Verdict - The Total Visa® Card will appeal to those have bad credit and want to get an unsecured credit card. There are some upfront fees and annual fees that you have to pay but to be honest, these fees are exorbitant even for a sub-prime card. If you are considering this card, you should also check out other cards. The type of cards that you will be approved for depends on your credit situation. the offering from Credit One Bank.

As a general guide, if you have just emerged from bankruptcy or have charge offs and collections that have not been settled or paid off, then a secured card like First Progress would be your best bet because you are highly unlikely to get approved for an unsecured card.

If on the other hand, you have settled any old charge offs or collections, have a 600ish score and have been paying on time for 6 months to a year and a good track record with your other installment credit like auto loans, you may have a shot at no annual fee unsecured cards like the Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard, the NFL Visa.

The Credit One Bank Visa with Gas Rewards is also a good alternative as it only has an annual fee (no upfront fees or monthly maintenance fees) and a reward program for gas purchases.

I applied for the TOTAL VISA CREDIT CARD so read on to everyone with "GREAT REASON"to be skeptic,on the query of, "How long does it take to receive my TOTAL VISA UNSECURED CREDIT CARD."

I want u all to know, i called "every five days"since approved Sept.4 this year.

I should've RESEARCH first.

I thought, "10 to fourteen days after i was approved." I was informed, but it can be sooner in a "Few days,as advertised and as said in an email to me."
So we are now looking at over SIXTY days and guess what...

I finally spoke to a very BAD-SPEAKING NON-PROFESSIONAL SPEAKING, no good at talking as a "supervisor, whose name is Raven or Raiven." She sucked. Was not able to give me any "REAL"Information as far as their truth and or policies in place,
and why i am being told all diff stories."
I want you all to know i got my card after get this, just about SIXTY one days or so and i am just warning you, KEEP CHECKING UP ON YOUR CARD. DON'T STOP. and i finally got mine, but damn sure would have NEVER paid up front almost 100 bucks for a card, i have NOT received yet."

Just wait to pay the 89.00 fee. Took sixty or so days to get a credit card from TOTAL.
I will b updating all in 3 months, let u know how this card is. Their site should be clear and not MISLEAD and say "up to thirty days" or an OUTLANDISH 2 months from time of making the payment for a card."Not worth it if you're going to lie to the American public,or will be sued i am sure if u r lying to the public, as it is clear, my card should have BEEN LEFT THE WAREHOUSE, after i was approved, NOT 1 to 2 months later."Those who are blessed in life, do not lie about such SERIOUS things in life." Now i will report here in three months winter time months of 2019, to let u all know how this card is, and or if it not "real" even if it say a real unsecured VISA card."
Give them ZERO-1-STAR for now premised on how long it took, yet i read some got it 1 to 3 days "after shipping date from total visa card warehouse."
ALWAYS RESEARCH FIRST when you're approved for a secured OR in my case this TOTAL UNSECURED VISA.

I only gave this card 1 star because there were no options for 0 stars! I've been paying the monthly fee every month for over a year, and have never been able to use this card for anything. NOTHING! So I called and asked why my card was always being declined, even though I have a $0 balance, and the operator told me they had sent me a new card with a different number, which I never received. So, if you're looking for a really sketchy credit card that you have to pay every month and get nothing in return, then this is the card for you!!!!

i have never had a credit card of my own in 35 years without difficulty. i received the total card in 2016. glad to have credit of $225 ($300 - $75) got some items i needed and wanted as i had been struggling financially with no credit history. i made first payment august 2016 via phone with debit card. have confirmation # and everything. they never took the payment out of my account. tried to pay online, not successful. called and was placed on hold for who knows how long. so i decided not to continue with use of card. now item is on my credit report as NEVER MADE FIRST PAYMENT. I have them $89.00, They gave me $225.00, now i owe them $225, $75, and a late fee of $37, and interest. Ok. If I wait 10 years it will drop off credit report. THAT IS NOT THE REASON I NEEDED CREDIT. I like not owing anyone - neither borrower or lender be, but I authorized them to receive payment from my account. Why is my credit report reflecting NO PAYMENT when in fact I did provide funds for payment. Why is my credit report listing bad account when I acted in good faith. AND I AM STILL RECEIVING OFFERS OF CREDIT - IF THEY STILL NEED THREE HUNDRED A MONTH, WHY DIDN'T THEY ACCEPT MY DAMNED PAYMENT AND LET ME BUILD CREDIT?

I was just approved online and sent a confirmation email. How long did it take to receive your card after you were approved? I play to pay the $89 fee with my debit card once I receive the card in the mail. I am seeing some people say that once they paid the initial fee they could not use their card for 2 weeks. Once you activated the card how long until you were able to use it?

The phone system is in need of a fix. When you call, you are automatically presented 2 options which does not include speaking to a representative. In fact, hunting down a number to call a rep is almost impossible.

The customer rep told me that I could use the card immediately after I paid the processing fee. Turns out I have to wait for 2 weeks!
