Sears Credit Card Review

There are 2 Sears credit card that I will talk about toay. The first is the Sears Store Card (picture above), which only allows you to use the card at Sears and Kmart. This card is primarily geared to folks who do not have good credit.

The other card which I’m going to talk at length is the Sears Gold MasterCard with Choice Rewards (picture above)

Rewards Formula – The Sears Gold MasterCard has two tiers in their reward system. First, there is the regular Sears Choice Rewards Program. There is no annual fee for this version. You will be able to earn one point for every dollar that you spend on the card.

Alternatively, you could enroll in the Sears Choice Rewards Program Select Membership. The Select Membership costs $25. But you get the benefit of being able to earn double points for every dollar that you spend at Sears stores, www.sears.com, Kmart stores, supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations and one point for every dollar spent on all other regular purchases.

Sears Choice Rewards Points have a three year expiration date.

Rewards – The Sears Choice Rewards allows you to redeem points for a variety of rewards like travel, merchandise and gift cards. The rewards are just OK and not as comprehensive and regular credit card reward programs. Below are screen shots of the rewards and links to some of their reward pages.

To see all their gift card rewards, you can go to this page. The thing that I do not like about their gift card rewards is that you need 2500 points for a $20 gift card (technically less than 1% payout), whereas a program like the membership rewards only require 2000 points for a $20 gift card.

Verdict – If you have bad credit and are looking for a store credit card, perhaps you can consider Sears. But the problem with all store cards is that you can only use them at the store (Sears and Kmart). You might want to consider getting a secured credit card instead, which can be used anywhere. I am not too impressed with the credit card. Yes, you can earn double points at Sears, Kmart and their affiliated stores but you need to pay an annual membership fee of $25 for the Choice Rewards Select Members Program. The reward program is not exactly not notch either.

Alternative – As an alternative, I am going to highlight another card that lets you earn 5% rebates every time you shop at Sears.com. That card is the Discover More Card. Discover has a shopping portal called shopdiscover.com. If you access sears.com through your account, and use your Discover Card to stuff online there, you will earn 5% rebates (I look at them more like discounts). Below are some screens shots of how it works. First, go to the shopdiscover.com partner page and search for Sears.

Once you find the Sears button, click it and it will take you to the page which list the rules and fine prints.

Click on the start shopping button and it will take you to the Sears.com site.

Here’s another point: Sears also owns Landsend. For the Sears Store Card or MasterCard does not allow you to shop at Landsend or earn double points (in the case of the MasterCard). But with the Discover Card, Landsend is a partner merchant and you can get 10% rebates when you shop at Landsend.com through your Discover Account. Hence, I highly recommend getting the Discover More Card rather than the Sears Credit Card.

Hello, I have a sears credit card and have had one for a very long time, but now I find us in trouble with our finances. I had been set up on an automatic withdrawl payment a few months ago, but everyone tried to debit my account at the same time and over drew the account and it took all our saving to cover all the withdrawls. So now, I find us in great financial trouble. All the automatic withdrawls have been cancelled with my bank, so no one can automatically take anything out of my account. When people try it does nothing but make a mess of my account and the bank has to put the take the money back. I am trying to get back on some kind of financial footing to try to pay all these bills. We are both inour 70’s and on fixed incomes, so makes it hard to deal with all the mounting bills and try to live and eat. So for now, I have stopped sending payments on some of the accounts till I can try to figure out how to get out of this mess. I am sorry for the inconvience, but I am trying to strighten this out. Everyone calls but no one leaves a message so I dont’ know who is calling. I don’t know what else to say. Virginia Bush

I have had a sears MasterCard for the past 5 years(since 2008) with the available credit limit of $8000. I’m 25 years old and have been working in getting my credit up. I receive monthly credit reports and today when I opened it- it showed my overall credit utilization was up to 54% on all credit cards—what!!?! It was 22% last month. I called sears and because I had a $0 balance on my MasterCard for 24 months they reduced my available credit from 8k to 2k without telling me! That 6k was half of my overall credit available for all my credit cards which SCREWED my credit score. I called and spoke with one person who transfered me to an acct specialist. They said they would apply to get my limit back up but surprise surprise I was denied becaus they had just dismantled my credit score!!! So now bc they took away 6k of my credit availability without telling me because they are greedy jerks- my credit it awful and I can’t even get my line of credit back because my credit is bad. I have at one time had a $5000 balance on that card and worked really hard to get it back to $0. It’s crap and this company is terrible. I hate sears MasterCard. DO NOT EVER GET ONE.

I opened a sears card Jan 2011. It is a god awful credit card.

Where to even begin, I will summarise. I am an average user and PIF when used average 707CS.

I will be closing my account after this next statement cuts, I have had my closure request notarized as well and send in RRR,certified usps.

1.Cannot report right to the CRA’s
2.Cannot understand agents
3.Constantly denying purchases
4.Every purchase, even as small as 20$ dvd requires “fraud department verification” where it is proceeded that I must answer about 15 different questions in order to make the 1 order go through.
“where did you live when your driver license was issued”
“what was the name of an(any) apartment complex you rented”
“how much was the monthly payment of your last auto loan(that was 15 years ago)” (I don’t know that, really?”
This is an every purchase occurrence. This occurs in store as well(no,your passport and DL is not enough ID verification for sears to shop in store).
I have asked that this stop, they say it cannot be stopped and thus I use the card only about every 4 months or so because it is such a pain in the ass.
5. The agents will talk over you so they can finish reading their text
6. There is no phone number for their credit department(address only), only customer service.
7. Credit line increases denied -every time
8. Buy on line pick up in store, not an easy transaction and must go through the same 15 questions, verification printout, ect ect. I did this one time to save 50$ on a washer, not worth it at all.

Beware that although this is not guaranteed to happen to you it may very well, I would not take this card on any kind of travel expedition.

Better option for an Appliance card :Lowes
Better option for a Dept card:JCP

I have both now, its time to be done with sears, they are the absolute worst credit card I have ever-EVER had.

Why pay $25 a year for extra rewards point that EXPIRE ? ? ? ?

Answer : I was , now I’m NOT ! ! !

Other credit cards offer 2x & 3x points on restaurants, grocery stores, online purchases etc etc – – guess what ?? They are no added fee and they do not expire ! !

I wish I had read your reviews before so I would have never applied for this card was given a credit of $8000.00 had my card the highest at $4000.00 paid my card balance completely half way thru they lowered my credit to $200.00 and just received a letter they were closing my acct due to low credit score when I only owe less than $2000.00 and having 4 credit cards you guys are the worst.
