How Do I Improve My Credit Score?

04/15/2010

My husband and I have a lot of debt that we are trying to handle without filing bankruptcy or using a debt settlement agency because we are trying to improve our credit. However, We have a lot of credit card debt. two of them have been charged off, two have been turned over to collections, one has been closed but it has not been turned over to a collection agency and one is open but we are a little behind on it. Can we improve our credit if we get caught up on the open credit card and the closed credit card and make payments on time while at the same time we make payment arrangements to pay as much as we can afford on the others?

Mrs Kim Johnson

In order to figure out which accounts to pay and clear up the fastest to increase your credit score, it may be helpful to know exactly how the FICO score is calculated.

As you can see, the largest factor in calculating your FICO score is your payment history, which includes your collection accounts and the charged off accounts, and possibly the account that is closed (not sure if that still has a balance) as well any late payments you may have on your open credit card.

In order to increase your credit score, you will need to clean up these accounts and establish a good payment history by making your payments on time and not missing any.

Here are some steps  you will need to take in order to increase your credit score:

  1. Call the companies with the charge offs. An account that has been charged off means that the creditor has declared the account as a loss and usually occurs after less than minimum payments have been made for 180 days. Some people think this means that the account is closed and cancelled but the creditor can still pursue collection and you are still responsible for the debt. Contact the account holder and try to negotiate a settlement amount and if possible, pay them off in full. You may also be able to negotiate a removal of the charge off from your credit report when the account is paid in full. Either way, it looks better to have a “charged off paid” or “charged off settled” than just “charged off”.
  2. Contact the collection agencies and negotiate the amounts owed as well. If you cannot get a pay off amount that works for you, set up a payment plan and work on paying these off.
  3. Pay your minimum monthly payment on the open account at least until you clear up the other accounts. This keeps your account in good standing until you can possibly pay more, similar to the Snowball Method. Because of the new issues on your credit report, it may be difficult for you to get another reasonable credit card or financing for a while so you want to do your best to keep this account open and in good standing.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hacking United Airlines New Credit Card Offer

04/14/2010

United Airlines, my favorite airline to kick around, is upping their credit card offer again.   This time they are offering an unprecedented 50,000 bonus miles for their Chase credit card.   Here are the details.    You have to spend $250 to receive the bonus, which frankly, is a pittance.   Yes, you can get get enough miles for two round trip domestic tickets, kind of like the Frontier deal that came and went.

It Is Not So Simple

United’s web site claims “Please note: This is offer is available to select members who are original recipients of a specific direct mail or email invitation. ”     Remember, this is United, almost no information they supply is reliable.   Sure enough, anyone can take advantage of this offer if you know a few tricks.   Over at Flyertalk, someone found out how to call Chase and get the offer.

Step 1: Call United’s Mileage Plus Customer Service at 800-325-0046.

Step 2:  Enter your Mileage Plus number but the wrong zip code.

Step 3: You will be transferred to a representative.   When you speak to the representative ask about the offer.

Not only do people report receiving the 50,000 mile bonus offer, but they specifically say that the 50,000 miles are awarded after your first purchase, not after the $250 in spending.   Some even report instant approvals over the phone.

Delta Matches, and Remembers

The Delta SkyMiles Amex is also making a similar offer, but these guys seem to have their act together a little bit more than United (not that that is saying much).   If you go to this link, some people are seeing offers of up to 50,000 SkyMiles plus 4 SkyClub (lounge) passes.   People are reporting more substantial spending requirements of $10,000 to receive the sign up bonus.    Furthermore, they even seemed to know before I applied that I had a SkyMiles card last year, and am ineligible.    United and Chase, on the other hand, tend to forget you once had a card a few years back.

Please note: This is offer is available to select members who are original recipients of a specific direct mail or email invitation.

Can Creditors Seize or Garnish My Spouse's Income?

Can credit card companies garnish or seize my wife’s income or accounts if she is not listed on the accounts. Also, if I file bankruptcy, does that affect her credit or have any adverse effect for her.
Mr. Bill Abramovic

ANSWER:

Bill,

These are two separate but similar questions, so I’ll answer the first one, first. No, companies or creditors cannot seize your wife’s income or bank accounts or any other property that belongs solely and is only in her name to cover your debt. If the bank accounts are held jointly, than a creditor may be able to take you to court and obtain a judgment. Alternatively, if the debt is in both names, then it doesn’t matter whose name is on the bank account and it is possible for her wages to be garnished. There are certain funds that are exempt and cannot be garnished or seized (Social Security benefits, for example) so keep that in mind as well. Otherwise it’s best to keep separate bank accounts if garnishment or seizure is possible.

The second part of your question is whether you can file bankruptcy without affecting your wife’s credit. Yes, you can. You can file an individual bankruptcy and your wife’s assets and property will be not be affected, nor will it affect her credit. If, however, you have any accounts that are jointly held and you include them in your bankruptcy, your wife will still be responsible for the debt. Another issue that may arise is if you and your wife want to obtain credit together in the future, the fact that you have a bankruptcy on your report could have a negative impact on any endeavor to purchase a home or vehicle later on. Bankruptcies where only one party files usually work out best if there are absolutely no accounts or property held together as the court and even creditors, may be able to seize anything of value that you own jointly.

Hope this helps!

International Airline Program – Free Companion Ticket For Business Class Flights

04/13/2010

One of the perks of my American Express Platinum Card is the International Airline Program where you can get a free business class companion ticket if you a qualifying ticket through American Express Platinum Travel Service. Recently, I was planning on a trip to Asia and since it is potentially such a long flight, I wanted to check if it made sense to make use of the International Airline Program. I called up Amex and had them research three airlines that would potentially take me to my destination – China Airlines. Jet Airways and Asiana Airlines. Prior to that, I checked out all of these airlines website. With the exception of Jet Airways, the websites for China Airlines and Asiana were not particularly user friendly. I managed to get a quick quote from a travel agent friend.

After a couple of email exchanges with Amex, they came back with various permutations and the cost of each. I would say that the business class fares were comparable to what I was quoted by another travel agent. Only this time, I could one and get one free.

But here is the kicker with this program. Mrs Credit Card is also allowed to make use of it. Because we have three kids, in theory, if we decided to travel business class for an international flight, we just have to pay for three tickets. I will make use of my card to get one free and Mrs Credit Card will make use of hers (which is just a supplementary card – ie authorized user and not her own card).

At the end of the day we decided not to bite the bullet, but instead spread out the trip and booked coach (really price difference). But I thought I should mention this an also update with their program partners for this year. And overall, I am pleased with their service and someday, I’m pretty sure I’ll make use of it and fly to Europe with Mrs Credit Card one of these days on business class!

But here are some screen shots of the program and their partners, which was taken from their 2010 partners guide.

How Do I Dispute an Incorrectly Reported Account?

I open an account with Lord and Taylor in 1989 and in 2000 I closed my account and make arrangement with the company and made my payments until my balance was in zero. In 2009 I receive phone calls asking me if I had an account with Lord & Taylor and I said yes, they asked me for my address and then, I start receiving letters saying that I owed to Lord & Taylor about 134 dollars, I respond and I said that I paid and I don’t have any balance with them. They continue sending me letters and phone calls, until one day I spoke with them and said that they will send me a letter that that balance is not mine, but I never received. After few months I start receiving phone calls from other collecting agent saying that now I owe them 196.66 dollars. Today I called Lord & Taylor and they transfer me with GE Services and they told me that the account was sold to another collecting agency. Firstly, if I know that I left an amount with Lord & Taylor I shoul d pay years ago, but is strange that I never received a bill from Lord & Taylor saying that I have a debt with them after I paid everything and I only receive from Collection companies this amount. I called and I really mad because I can’t pay something that is not mine, of course that this amount was reported to my credit report and is affecting strongly my score. What I can do?? Please I want to get out of this.

Norma Lema

ANSWER Norma:

If  you absolutely can’t get any information from the collection agencies or from Lord & Taylor (and it sounds like you have tried) regarding the account, you probably need to just dispute it with the credit bureau. This is actually a much simpler process than trying to chase down which collection agency claims to have the account.

First, you need to request credit reports from all three credit bureaus, TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. If the account is reported with all three bureaus, you will need to dispute the account with all three. If anything, you will also have access to the information for whichever collection agency is reporting it.

Next, although you can dispute accounts on your credit report  online, it may be better to mail a dispute letter along with the facts and details of the account you had with Lord & Taylor. Include the account information and the reasons it is being reported inaccurately.  Also send copies of any records, in your case if you have the last statement that you paid with Lord & Taylor and bank statements showing the payment, you should be able to have the account removed from your file immediately. Send the dispute letters certified return receipt requested.

The credit bureau will investigate usually within 30 days and will forward your dispute to the information provider. If the collection agency cannot verify the information or concludes that the information reported is inaccurate, they are required to report back to the credit bureau and will have to remove the file from your report as well as notify all three credit bureaus of the change or deleted file. Once the account has been removed from your file, the collection agency cannot add the account back to your credit report unless they verify that the information is accurate and complete, in which case you’ll receive the information as well.

Another point you may want to add is that collection accounts can only be reflected as negative marks  on your credit report  for 7 years from the time you made a late payment or the account went to collections. Depending upon when your account first went to collections, the credit reporting agencies may remove this from your report simply because it’s past the 7 year mark.

If anything, you will get the information regarding the account you have been trying to attain and you can go from there, but it sounds like an account that the credit bureaus will quite possibly just remove.

Good luck!

Confraria Studio HandBag – Amex Platinum Concierge Gets Mrs Credit Card Her 13th Anniversary Present

04/12/2010

Mrs Credit Card and myself recently celebrated our 13th Anniversary. For years, she has been bugging me to upgrade her diamond ring. But the frugal side in me resisted and told her to wait another year. Recently, she was reading the latest Departure Magazine that we get being an American Express Platinum Card member.

One of the columns in the magazine is called the Black Book, where the editor will try to find something great and unique in various cities. For example, she might recommend a great restaurant, the best places to shop in that city. In this particular issue, they highlighted a few cities in Brazil. One of the items they mentioned was this boutique called Confraria Studio. They featured a handbag that was designed by a particular designer. They even felt that this bag was the “Birkin” equivalent in Brazil. It is designed by Paula Avila e Silva. This handbag combines mahogany and gold-plated fitting and calf skin from Brazil. Unfortunately, I can’t find any pictures of the handbag on the web (so I’ll show it to you folks when it gets delivered).

Mrs Credit Card looked up their web site but could not find the design there (guess it is really exclusive) and there were telephone numbers to call. In any case we cannot speak the language. So Mrs Credit Card decided to put Amex Concierge Service to test.

She called them up and told them about this bag that appeared in the Departure Magazine and asked if they could it for her on her behalf and charge it to our Platinum Card. Mrs Credit Card felt that it is a safer way to purchase an expensive handbag because it was a Brazilian boutique that has no locations in the US. The concierge person asked if she would liked to be update by phone calls or by email. Mrs Credit Card decided that she wanted to be updated by emails so that there is a paper (or rather electronic) trail. So below are the emails that she got.

Dear Mrs Credit Card,

I hope your day is going well. I am working on your request for the Diva Bag from the Confraria Studio in Brazil. I have contacted the store and our Amex Lifestyles office, and am just awaiting their replies on the bag availability, cost, and shipping to USA/feasibility. I will update you within a few days.

Sincerely,

Andrea Hastings

Hi Andrea,

Just to reconfirm, this is the bag featured on page 34 of the last departure issue made of Calfskin. If so, please go ahead and purchase ONE for me and charge US$1056 to my platinum card (security # xxxx) & my tel number is xxx-xxx-xxx. I also give you permission to release my card/billing information to the merchant for this purchase. Kindly provide me with a billing confirmation/receipt via email of mail as proof of purchase. The mailing address for the Diva bag is the same as our billing address which is :

xxxxxxxxxx

Thank you and I look forward to receiving my Diva Bag.

Dear Mrs Credit Card

I hope your day is going well. As you requested in your conversation with my colleague, Maryann, I was pleased to research the Diva Bag, as shown in the recent Departures Magazine. Our Concierge Lifestyles in Brazil has provided the details, as listed below.

If you would like us to purchase the bag on your behalf, please let us know. We would require the card’s 4-digit security code, contact phone and permission to release card/billing address information for the purchase.

Sincerely,

Andrea Hastings

Here are some pictures of handbags from Confraria.

So Mrs Credit Card is actually pretty pleased with what the Amex Concierge Service has done. We have not been billed yet. And she looks forward to the day (probably in about a month) when she gets her 13th Anniversary present.

And by then it will be her birthday and perhaps she will blow the bank account again. But that is for another day and another story!
