Our Take
Our Take

Sears have had their Mastercard issued by Citi for ages. In 2017, they introduced their Sears "Shop Your Way" Mastercard, which is the same as their previous card except for the following. For the first 12 months, you can earn 5% back on gasoline and 3% back at restaurants and groceries for up to a combined spending of $10,000 for these categories. Once you exceed that amount, you earn 1%. For purchases at Sears and Kmart, you earn 2% back and 1% back for regular purchases.

It is a great card for the first year with the 5/3 rewards. From the second year onwards, it returns to a more "normal" store card. The Shop Your Way program allows you to earn points and redeem them for discounts. They also have an online portal where you can save money shopping the portal.

If you shop at Sears a lot, this might be a card you would want to consider. For rebuilders, it would be much easier to get the Sears Store Card. The average score for card holders who got approved for this card (and provided their reviews here) was 701.

I gave them one star due to their horrible customer service, both online through messaging and on the phone via the number on the back. I created a new email account as my old one was full of spam and I want to delete it. I have changed that email over and over, sent complaints over and over only to be told to contact tech support via the number on the card. Tech support says it's fixed, but it never is. I reply to messages sent to the wrong email yelling and cussing in capitol letters to stop using that email!!!! This has gone on for months. I think my only option now is to cancel my online account, then start a new one, just like I had to do a few years ago. What a bunch of inept morons!!

This is a hoax. I received the card in the mail although I did not ask for it. I did not activate it. I tried to call customer service but could not reach a person. The recording asked me to state my social security number. Avoid this card!

Sears had a fantastic 10% statement back promotion at the end of 2015. I received the activation code. But in my next statement, I did not see the credit. So I called CSR and they said that it will take 2 or 3 billing cycles. But after 3 months, I still did not see it. When I called CSR again, they said that the code was not activated and after some negotiations, they told me that they will give me half of what I earned. All I can say is that Citi's customer service and systems suck big time.

I got this card initially when I was buying a mattress to get some discounts and use the 0% financing. After a couple of years, I was remodeling my kitchen and I got an email promoting 5% off kenmore appliance. I shopped around and eventually ended up getting the kenmore appliances with 5% off from the card and more from the discounts they were offering in store.

I have had the regular sears store card for years. I use it about once a month if I am at sears. I got a mail a couple of years back asking me to upgrade. I decided to upgrade since I figure that the benefits are about the same but I get a mastercard which I can use anyone.

The is a sears and kmart quite close to where I live and I shop there quite a bit. I was attracted to the he Shop Your Way Mastercard since they gave 5% on gas, 3% on grocery and restaurants for 12 months. I sure took advantage of it. After the first year, those go away but you still get 2% on Sears/Kmart and 1% for everything else.

But Shop Your Way still allows you to earn points and sometimes they have sales where if you purchase a certain amount, you will get $10 worth in points. So essentially it works like a coupon.

This card is nice to have except for the fact that the interest rate is really high. If you carry a balance, I think you should pass on this. If you pay in full, then I guess it does not matter.

I was shopping for a new mattress for the master bedroom and finally settled on one from sears. Actually I found it online at sears.com and when I checked out, I chose the 0% 18 month financing. However, when I got my statement, I was still charged the interest. I called customer service and it was resolved pretty quickly. So here's a 5-star for customer service.

I applied for the store card once but was denied. But after a couple of years, I was persuaded by the folks at the store to open this card so I can save like $15. I did and was approved. I later found out that the interest rate is really high (like 25% for me) so I make an effort to pay off the full balance every month. It has the same benefits as the store card but you can use it anywhere because it is a mastercard.

I have been shopping at sears and kmart for 20 years. I finally agreed to apply for this card after the sales associate kept pestering about getting a discount on my purchase. I got approved on the spot. Over the months i have used it, I have come to appreciate the discount and sales alerts every month. If you shop at kmart or sears a lot, this card will serve you well. The interest rate is high though, so I pay it off every month.

Have been a sears customer for over 20 years and I have had their card for about 7 years. They recently closed my card for no apparent reason. Called customer service and all they could say is that they are very selective of who can get a Sears card. I have always paid on time, never had a late payment and this is how they treat you. None of my other cards have ever lowered my limit or closed my accounts (and I am talking about companies like Chase and Amex). Be very aware of this card.

I got the sears mastercard when I was buying a treadmill and figured that the savings and 0% financing at that time would be great for me. I have come to find out that you do get sales notifications and discounts when you have the card.

The bad thing about this card is that the interest rate is rather high. Ours was close to 20% area (which is ridiculous considering that I have great credit).

Also, you can only apply the mastercard in store whereas you can apply for the store card online.

I had the Sears store card and was upgraded a couple of years ago to the Mastercard. My credit line with the store card was only $1500. It is now at $2000. I did not really use the card a lot (maybe once a month a a Kmart near my house).

I was in the midst of renovating my kitchen and I went to check out Sears and Lowes for appliances. I liked the Kenmore range from Sears and thought that they were more competitively priced. I ended up getting the mastercard as I checked out and got the discounts and 0% financing for 12 months.

As I have had this card longer, I appreciated it more as you get alerts on sales and regular discounts. If you shop at sears (especially if you are going to buy big ticket items), then this is a great card to get.

Despite my credit rating, the interest rate I got was pretty high - like 18% or something. I would say that if you carry a balance, then there are much better cards. If you pay your balance in full, then I guess it is fine if you shop at sears or kmart a lot.

I have been a sears mastercard holder for 7 years. My card was about to expire and I did not receive my new card. I later found out that they closed the account without my knowledge. The CSR (from India) told me that the account has indeed been closed. I asked why and no reason was given. I asked to speak to a supervisor and and they could not give me a proper answer. All I would say is stay clear of this card and any cards from citi.

This happened years ago. I originally had the sears/kmart card. Then I got a mail "congratulating me" that I will get a new Sears Mastercard that would replace the sears/kmart card that I had and I was also invited to join the sears choice rewards program. I have had the card since and if you buy big ticket stuff like appliance from sears, then this card would come in very handy.

I got this card because I had to buy a washer dryer and a new refrigerator. So all goes smoothly with the card. Then one day I found out that I was "enrolled" in paperless billing (which I did not enroll). Called customer service and they told me that I must have done this automatically. But regardless, I found out that I had 2 months of late fees and interest. They only managed to remove 1 months worth of late fees. Needless to say, I am cancelling this card. Stay clear. Don't say you have not been warned.

I have had this card for many years. Not too long ago, I tried to use the card and it was declined. So I went to my online account on my phone and found that there was a fraudulent charge. Called customer service and was actually told that they could not find my account. By then, I was really pissed. but then I calmed down and called back a few minutes later. I explained what happened and told her about the fraudulent charge and asked her to fix the situation. She told me that I could not use the card because I had run out of credit limits. She then closed my account and told me that a new card will be sent to me in a few days. So while at the checkout counter, I used another card that I had in my wallet.

After a couple of days, I called customer service again just to make sure that the dispute I filed is being handled. The rep pulled up my account and said " yes, I see 2 disputed charges". OMG!!! I told her that it was only 1 dispute and the previous charge was valid. So she said she will make a note and make sure the dispute is only for 1 charge.

I am so unimpressed with their customer service. I have discover card and it is light years ahead of citi.

This card has to be one of the worst around. Applied initially and got $4000 in credit limit. I have always paid on time but after 8 months, my credit line was reduced to $3500. I called and asked why? And guess what they said? credit card companies do that all the time! So I have canceled my card. This is simply ridiculous.

Beyond any introductory offer, this card shines for me because there are regular discounts and sales on power tools. I managed to pick up a few over the last couple of years. If you do not buy any big ticket item from sears, then this card is probably not for you.

I got this card when my washer and dryer needed replacement. We had a sales associate guide us through our purchase and when it was time to check out, we applied for the card and got 18 month financing (if I recall correctly). I have since kept the card because I bought other stuff like coffee machines from Sears as well.

My only experience with customer service was when I forgot my password and they simply guided me over the phone to reset it.

If you shop at Sears, this is a great card.

I am sort of immune to clerks at check out counters pestering me to get their "store" credit card. But when I was last shopping at Sears, I thought that the benefits were too good to be true. So I signed up and was able to use it right there and got a great discount off what I was buying.

After using the card for several months, I decided to keep it because I keep getting notifications for sales and coupons. Since I shop at Sears quite a bit, I find this card really useful.

I got this card after being persuaded at the check out counter. You do get the 0% financing and discounts. And the regular coupons and sales alerts are great. What is also great is that this is a mastercard. Many stores only have store cards and do not have mastercard or visa.

But you should only get this card is you shop a lot at Sears.

I BKed 13 10 years ago and took a Citi card down with me in BK. So I never expect to get a Citi for a long time. A couple of years ago, I tried applying for a Sears card but got denied. A couple of weeks ago, I was at Sears looking to buy some appliance and the clerk persuaded me to apply for a card to get a discount. I went for it and I actually got approved for the Sears MasterCard for $5k CL.

I have been reading up on this card for a bit and do realize that if Citi does not approve me, then I might get the HSBC version for the Sears Solution Card. Surprised Citi is finally OK with me!

This is actually a great card if you shop for appliance at sears. Periodically, you get discounts on appliances and other stuff together with a 0% financing period that varies (sometimes 12 months, others at 18 months). So if you buy a big ticket item at 5% discount and get 0% financing, it is a good deal. So if you have plans to get big ticket items at Sears, I'd say definitely go for it.

I've used my card for a refrigerator, washer and dryer and a stove.

I have both the store card and the master card. What I really like is the Shop Your Way Rewards program that Sears and Kmart offers. Both my cards are linked to the same account so I can use either one. Shop Your Way very often offers promotions where you get double or triple points. You can also get 0% and sometimes a percentage off when making large purchases such as appliances, mattresses, lawn mowers etc.

I think like most folks here, I got the card because the clerk told me I could get $15 off my purchase. I got approved for the master card version with a $6k line and my score was about 735 (EQ).

I found this card really useful when I was doing my kitchen reno. Decided after looking around to buy my appliance from Sears and there was a 5% off and 0% 12 month financing going on. Saved me quite a bit. They are always have sales which they will email you so if you shop at Sears, I think that this is actually a good card.

There was a fraudulent charge on my card once and after a quick phone call, they acknowledged that and sent me a new card right away (which I got a week or so later).

Aside from this card, I also have other "store" cards like GAP and Macys. All I would say is that you should only get these cards if you shop with them. Sears is really no different from other store cards is that you get special discounts and financing and advance notice on sales and deals. But I think what sets it apart is that if you big ticket items (which you really can't with GAP for example), then you can really save a lot with the discounts and 0% financing.
