Our Take

The Sears store card is a few for those of you who shop at Sears regularly to save money on big ticket items or get 0% financing deals. Because it is a store card, it is easier to get than the Sears Mastercard and many rebuilders get this card to rebuild their credit as well.

Card holders have provided mixed reviews with regards to credit line increases, with some saying Sears have increased their limit generously while others have had no success. The APR is rather high (which is quite typical for a store card) and you should try to avoid carrying a balance.

Card holders who wrote reviews below had an average credit score of 661 and most have starting credit limits ranging from $300 to $600.

After a few years of rebuilding with secured credit cards and even high fee subprime cards, I finally managed to get the Sears card. There was a store about 15 minutes from my house and I thought that it made sense to get the card. Once I got it, offers from other issuers came and I managed to get Macys and a couple of Capital One cards. I immediately canceled my old Credit One and First Premier cards.

Things went well for over a year. I shop at Sears quite often and even pay my credit card bills there. However, there as holiday season approached, my gift shopping got a little out of hand and I spent over $600 at Sears. I took about 6 months to pay off the balance (and boy were those rates high). However, after I paid off the balance, my limit was reduced to $200! I called customer service and all I was told was that I had not used my card "for a while". Off course I had not used the card for a while and that was because I was paying off my balance!

Come to think of it, even Credit One or First Premier have never cut my limit! I have since canceled the card and shop less at Sears.

Whenever I shop at Sears, the cashiers will always be asking me to apply for the card because I could either get some discounts or 0% financing. I always found it so cheezy until I relented one day because I decided to buy a kitchen aid blender and thought I could use the discounts. The application was easy and I approved on the spot. I would say that the card is ok but the thing that puts me off is the interest rate. It is so high and I have been conscious not to carry a balance.

A couple of years ago, my kitchen stove broke down and I had to buy a new one. After shopping around a couple of stores, I decided to get one from Sears. At the checkout counter, the cashier asked me to apply for the Sears store card and told me I could either get 5% off or have 12 month financing at 0%. I decided to go for it and after providing my SSN and DL, I was approved for $1000 which was enough for the stove. I also decided on the 12 month financing.

Since then, I have rarely used the card except when I go to Sears (which ain't much). I tend to pay in full because the rate is ridiculously high. As a reference point, my score was 650 when I got the card. And I was actually surprised to get the limit I got. I guess it was because of the "higher" ticket price of the stove I was buying.

I got this card as part of my rebuilding effort and is my first store card that I got. There is a Sears 15 minutes from my place (which is now closed!). I used to shop there and used the card for that purpose. The benefits were ok. You get the occasional sales in your email inbox. But otherwise, I never bought any big ticket items or used their 0% financing. I did however find out that the interest rate was really high (like 25%) when I ran a balance once for 4 months. It is simply outrageous.

I would say that as a rebuilder, I can't really complain too much about the card but the APR is predatory level! The starting limit is also low and unlike some others here, I have not gotten any CLI. Right after I got this card, I got a Cap One with a $1500 limit. So before you pull the trigger on this card, there are much better alternatives for rebuilders. Only get this card when you want to buy a big ticket item and get the financing.

I actually applied for the Sears Mastercard in the store but was declined. I took a chance and applied for the store right there and was approved. I got 5% off my purchase straight away. I like the card simply because I shop at Sears and I know I have the option of 0% financing if I were ever to purchase a big ticket appliance.

I got the Sears card at the counter and got 5% off whatever I was buying that day (should have bought more stuff). I was approved on the spot with a $700 limit. The thing that I really like about this card (and a couple of other store cards) is that you can pay your bills in the store. I have had many bad experiences with online pay and auto pay and this works out best for me. Like others have said here, pay in full. The interest rate is really high and you should not carry a balance.

This was my first no annual fee credit card that I got as a rebuilder. Prior to that, I had First Premier and Credit One. I cancelled both when I got this card, a Fingerhut and a Capital One card. I was really glad to ditch those cards with annual fees. They served their purpose and got my from low 500s to low 600s.

As far as the card goes, I have taken advantage of the 0% financing on a couple of appliances. They come in really handy. I also like to pay my bills in the store. The interest rate is high. I think it is like 25% or 26% which is like my previous cards. So the best thing is not to carry a balance. After a year with the card, my limit was increased to $2000. Needless to say, I am happy with Sears.

There is a Sears store about 20 minutes from where I live and a Kmart 5 minutes away. So I actually end up using this card more at Kmart than Sears itself. I do not use the card often because shopping in Kmart has become really depressing as the stores look worse over the years. It is just so dated and not maintained at all. Still, I do some gift shopping there occasionally and find the card useful.

I usually pay off my balance in full because the rates are really high. When I got this card, my scores were in the low 600s and I got a $300 limit. I suspect Sears will close down sooner or later or I think this card will soon be gone. But I have already gotten proper Visa and Mastercard so this would not bother me at all.

I signed up for this card upon the advice of the salesperson who was selling me a stove. If I remember correctly, I saved about 10% off and got some 0% financing. I paid it off by the time the 0% deal ended cos the rate was like 25%! Since then, I have used the card when I shop at Sears and that does not happen too often.

If you are buying an appliance from Sears, then it might not be a bad idea to get the card.

Whenever I am at Sears, the cashier always ask me to apply for their store card. It got quite irritating and I never took out the offer. However, one day, I was buying an Xbox for my son and I thought why not? since I could save some money off the purchase. All I needed was my SSN and showed my drivers license and I was approved for $500 (which was enough to pay for the Xbox).

Since then, I have had a CLI and my limit was increased to $2000. This allowed me to buy a fridge from Sears and take advantage of their 10% off and 0% financing deal.

I had this very bad experience with my Sears Card. I had a limit of $500 and ran up a balance of $400 during the holiday season. Since then, I have paid more than the minimums every month and have never been late. However, once I had paid off half my balance, they immediately cut my limit by that amount and so now all I have is $300 and my utilization ratio is up again.

Once I pay off the balance, I WILL cancel this card. That is simply not the way to treat someone who has been shopping at Sears for years.

I got the Sears card because I was getting some bedsheets set the cashier told me that I was able to get a 0% promo for 24 months. I needed to give me SSN and was approved "on the spot" and the purchase cleared. The card arrived a few days later and all seem to work out fine. Then after 7 months, my statements indicated that there was an interest charge. I thought that the promotion was for 24 months and it turns out that it was only for 6. Customer service was rude and useless and outsourced overseas. I decided to bite the bullet, pay off the balance and cancel the card. Never ever get a Sears card.

I got the Sears card because I need to get a washer/dryer for my apartment. I found the model that I wanted at Sears and the cashier advised me to apply for the Sears card and I was approved. Because of that, I managed to get a discount (can't remember how much) and a 12 month 0% financing. This works out great cos I do not have to shell out a huge upfront payment.

I got this card when I was on a kitchen appliance splurge - blender, juicer etc. Like many others here, cashier persuaded me to apply for the Sears card on the spot to get the discounts and 0% promo rate. After I paid off the balance, I continued to use the card whenever I am at Sears.

There was once where I forgot to bring my card but the cashier managed to find my name in the system and allow me to pay with the card without me having the card with me.

So far, this card has worked out just fine for me (which I cannot say for some of my other retail cards). One piece of advice though: the interest rate is high. Unless you are on a 0% promo, you should definitely pay off your balance every month.

For about 8 months, this card worked out ok. Then I went on a shopping spree and charged close to my credit limit on the card. I took about the next 9 months to pay it off. In the meantime, I did not use the card again because I really wanted to pay off the card. Once I paid off, they cut my limit to $200! Are you kidding me? Called customer service and spoke to countless "supervisors" and none could give an explanation that made sense. One said there are changes to my credit report (there were not). Another said I had not use the card for a while (off course and that is to pay off the balance). Anyway, I canceled the card. Sears is not really a fun place to shop these days anyway.

I was in Sears shopping for some appliance and decided to get a washer and dryer and a new fridge after my house renovation. The sales rep told me to apply for the Sears card as I could get 5% off and 0% 12 month financing. Many years ago, I included Citi in my BK and I wasn't sure if I could get approved. She said there was no harm trying since the savings that I could get add up to quite a bit. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised when I was approved for a $4k limit. That sure saved me some money and allowed me to defer the payments.

For those of you who have had a BK with Citi's card, it might be worth a shot if you want to get the Sears card.

I started off with a $500 limit and have never really complained about it since I do not come anywhere close to hitting the limits. Having said that, they have never increased my limit so I called CSR one day and asked if they would do a hard pull if I wanted a CLI. She said if it is not a large amount over my limit then there would be no HP. I said I wanted $200 and a few seconds later, it was approved!

When I first got this card, my score was slightly below 600 and all I got was a $250 limit. There is a Sears store near my place and I have been going there at least once a month and the $250 limit was ok. My utilization might have been high on the card but I have others cards so my overall usage is low. There card is good in that you get deal alerts and savings which helps when you want certain items.

But eventually, I got sick of having such low limits. I went to the site and requested a credit limit increase online. I simply put $15k since my other cards now have this limit (bear in mind my score is now in the 700s). To my surprise, I actually received an email saying that I was approved and $15k is my new limit! I checked my 3 reports and there was not even a soft pull!
