Our Take
Our Take

This secured card is specifically targeted at frequent flyers of AeroMexico Airlines who have no credit or bad credit and cannot get their regular unsecured credit card. Since this secured card is also an airline affinity card, it comes with benefits that are more commonly found in airline credit cards than regular secured credit cards.

On US Bank's website, it says that after 12 months of managing your credit obligations" responsibly, you may be offered to graduate to a regular AeroMexico Visa unsecured card. It also says that you have to print the application form and mail in either a money order or cashier's check along with the application form. This is slightly different from other issuers where you just submit your details online.

This appears to be a decent card and will suit those who fly with AeroMexico. Tip: You should put in enough of a deposit to pay for any airline tickets.

This is terrible card!! Stay away, take it from someone who has had many different airline credit cards. Recently I’ve been flying to Mexico every month or so for business. I thought I’d switch from Volaris to Aeromexico. So I signed up for Aeromexico’s signature Visa card to earn miles and other advertised benefits. This card is a scam!!!

#1. You’ll never end up using any of your companion tickets. They are absolutely worthless. On the back of the ticket it has a phone number. When you call it and if you ever get a hold of anyone they then tell you to email AM call center USA and wait for them to reply. I didn’t get a reply for 2 weeks, and had to send multiple emails. Finally someone helps me and asks what dates I want to use the companion ticket, so I tell them. They quote me $1818!!! This is from Sacramento to Guadalajara. Online you can get two tickets for $800 total ($400 a ticket). I ask why is it $1000 more using a free ticket? Makes no sense. They tell me the $800 price online is class V and companion has to be class Y, M, or B. Ok so I go back online and find tickets Y, M, B and it comes to $850 total for 2 tickets. So I figure $425 for 1 ticket and about $150 tax for the companion so roughly $600 for 2 tickets. But nooo they still said it’s $1818. Now the excuse was they do not have access to online prices, only super outrageous prices they just make up and you cannot verify (nowhere in their disclosures do they state this, they only state companion ticket cannot be used with other discounts but don’t tell you all the prices you see online are discounted!!). So basically using the free ticket costs $1000 more lol. It’s a total joke.

2. The free check back benefit doesn’t do you any good unless going to central or South America. Doesn’t work for usa to Mexico.

3. The buy 3 tickets get 1 free are useless like the companion ticket since they rape you on the other tickets you purchase. So unless you want to make a lot more you’ll never ever end up using any of these benefits. I even asked the am call center people what benefits am I actually getting that se useful and they never replied lol.

4. I’m calling tomorrow to see about using my miles so I’ll update once that happens. If that’s a scam too I’m going to call us bank and ask for my money back.

Again stay away from this card. I’ve used Alaska, Southwest, delta, American cards and Aeromexico’s is by far the worst, not even close.

I was pretty excited when I got this card because of the features that came with it. But I have only run into disappointments. Firstly, the free checked bag does not work if you flex to Mexico! Was told it only works if you fly to Central or South America! If you ask me, I think this is the most ridiculous thing. Secondly, I have not been able to use the companion ticket like someone else here has posted. Customer service of both AeroMexico and US Bank are clueless.

I was seriously considering getting the unsecured version (either through graduation or just applying) when my credit gets better. But I am now having second thoughts.

I have had this card for over 2 months and so far so good. When I applied, like many here, I decided to deposit a large amount ($1000) to make sure I have enough money to get airline tickets. I was approved after 7 days (no instant approval) and got my card about a week later. I have made my first purchase and just got my bonus miles. I like that I get 2X points at supermarkets and the gas station. I also recently checked with my credit reports and US Bank has reported this card. It is reported as secured.

I have read here about issues with the companion ticket and checked bags. I have not booked a ticket on AeroMexico yet and cannot comment on it (yet). Also, though it has only been 2 months, my EX score has improved by 40 points! Can't say if it is this card specifically but I think it is more of the fact that I got a secured card and put down a large deposit.

I am a skymiles member and have flown AeroMexico many times to Mexico and South America for business. I am in a credit rebuilding phase right now so I figured that this will be a good card to earn some miles on an airline that I fly. I have not had the card for a long enough time to comment in detail but so far, the experience has been good.

When I applied for this card, I put down $700 for the deposit. Then I realized that it might be too low given the cost of airline tickets (depending on where I fly). So I decided to write a check to US Bank to increase my credit line by another $700. When I called customer rep to find out about my status, she told me that I was denied because of my debt to income ratio. I do have quite a bit of student loans but I was really surprised since that deposit should be my collateral! This does not make any sense at all.

AeroMexico miles are useful because they are part of the Skyteam alliance and you can book flights with Delta, Air France and other airlines as well. I am a Delta member and wanted a card to help rebuild my credit but Delta does not have a secured card. I chose this card instead and so far the experience has been ok. The sign up bonus is not much (but I don't expect much since it is a secured card). But the annual fee is reasonable. The only problem is that since I don't really fly AeroMexico, I do not know how to make use of their companion ticket!!

Rep told me that the card does not graduate but I intend to get a Delta card eventually anyway.

After my divorce, my credit tanked. I had to clean up and settle some collections. After I had done that, I decided to apply for this card since I already have an account open as I fly with them for business about twice a year. I put a large deposit just to give me some cushion on when I buy tickets. I have also used this card to rent a car and had no problems at all. It is nice that this card comes with a companion ticket.

Ok folks - you have to be aware of a couple of things.

First, I have never ever managed to use the companion ticket. There is a bar code and the website is never able to accept it. Called both US Bank and AeroMexico and they are not able to help.

Still I have give this card a 3 star rating since the annual fee is ok and if you take away the rewards, it is an ok secured card. But don't expect much from the companion ticket.

The features advertised on this card are a joke. I don't about everyone else but I have never been able to use the $99 companion ticket. Seems like both Aeromexico and US Bank reps are not aware of it. I have never been successful with the checked bag also. It really looks like no one is aware of these features that the card offers. It is really misleading.

My score was about 538 when I applied. I got an email 7 days later telling me I was approved and the card arrived about a week later after the approval. So all in, the process took about 14 days. I deposited $1200 (to have some buffer for airline tickets) and am using this card to rebuild my credit. The great thing is that I get rewards for spending (unlike most secured cards). In addition to 1X for every purchase, you get 2X for gas and grocery spending. After my first billing statement, I checked my report and US Bank has already reported.

This is my story. Score was about 560. Had a few delinquent accounts in my reports though a couple did drop off over time. AeroMexico was one of the secured credit cards I applied for (the other one being Capital One). Both cards have been good to me and over the last year, my credit score improved by about 80 points. I think I am now ready to move on to a couple of unsecured cards.

I have had this card for slightly over 2 years. I got it to rebuild my credit and also because my job takes me to South America. The card has certainly helped me to improve my credit and it is over 700 now. There are some nice things about this card. The annual fee is actually quite low for a secured card and you also get a companion ticket worth $99. I've got mine and used it (you have to work hard to find available flights to redeem this). The card also pays interest on your deposit unlike many secured cards.

However, unlike Cap One secured (which I also have), they report as secured. They also do not graduate and I was told that I have to apply for the unsecured version. I intend to do that and will be canceling the card soon.
