Speedway SuperAmerica MasterCard Peer Comparison
The Speedway SuperAmerican Mastercard (with what is effectively a 4% rebate card) is not at the top of it's class. The is occupied by cards like Shell, BP and Marathon, which all pays 5% rebates. But 4% rebate is respectable and is on par with cards like Lukoil and Phillips Conoco. And it is certainly better than cards like Hess and Gulf, which only pays 3% rebates on gasoline.
What how does it fare against cards that lets you earn gas rebates at any station? With the exception of one card, I would say that it fares pretty well.
Speedway SuperAmerica Verus Costco Credit Card - The Costco credit card has two versions, a consumer and small business version. The consumer version pays 3% rebates on gasoline, 2% on restaurants and dining. So on the gasoline front, the Speedway beats it though it lacks the additional rebates on the travel and dining portion. The Costco business card pays 4% rebates on gas (which matches the Speedway) and also 3% on dining and 2% on travel. Furthermore, because 4% from Costco applies to all gas stations, it beats out the Speedway SuperAmerica.
Speedway SuperAmerica Versus Amex Blue Cash EveryDay - The Blue Cash EveryDay pays a lesser rebate on gas than Speedway (2% versus 4%). It does however, pay 3% rebates on groceries and 2% on department stores. These are additional categories that the Speedway card does not have. But given that the gas rebate is double that of the Blue Cash Everyday, the Speedway is the winner here.
Speedway SuperAmerica Versus Discover OPEN Road Card - The Discover OPEN Road Card offers 2% rebates on gasoline and restaurant purchases, though it caps the rebates you can earn on these categories to a monthly spend of $200! So just on gasoline alone, the Speedway offers double the rebates on gas without any restrictions. Even though Discover does have a shopping portal where you can earn 5% to 20% with their online merchants, I'd give this shootout to Speedway.
Speedway SuperAmerica Verus PenFed Gas Rebate Card - The PenFed VISA Platinum Gas / Cash Rewards Card is the only card that beats the Speedway SuperAmerica MasterCard. 5% on rebates at all station blows away 4% at just Speedway SuperAmerica stations. Furthermore, you also get 2% rebates on groceries that Speedway does not offer.
Speedway SuperAmerica - Is 4% Rebates On Gas Good Enough?
Pros - 4% rebates on gasoline (while not the best) is a very good rebate number.
Cons - Like all gas card, the rebates on gas only apply to their stations. It also does not offer more than 1% rebates on additonal categories.
Verdict - Though the Chase Speedway Superamerica Platinum Mastercard pays a very good 4% rebate for any purchases made at Speedway Superamerica stations. If you only use their stations, this is not a bad card to get. However, you might also want to consider the PenFed VISA Platinum Gas / Cash Rewards Card as well, as you can earn better rebates on gas as well as groceries. The Costco business card is also a better card to get if you are a Costco member.
