I like everything about this card except for one thing. When I went to Europe, the Chip does not work even though I have "activated my 4 digit pin" with USAA. It appears that the Chip automatically defaults to signature. When when you are buying train tickets in Europe, be prepared to have coins!
I am tempted to give this card a 2 star just because of this but decided not to cos most other US based cards are chip and signature and not chip and pin.

I had the USAA Classic Amex and decided get another USAA Amex card. I was thrilled to have been approved for this because it has no annual fee. But after having used the card for a while, I wished I applied for the amex plus instead. I spend too little to earn the most rewards cos it is tiered. It starts off at 0.45% and gradually increases. Based on how I use the card, I might barely reach 1%.

My credit wasn't very good. So to rebuild, one of the cards I got was the USAA secured. After 2 years with the card, I decided to apply for this card and was very happy that I was approved.

To be honest, I am a little disappointed at the cash back rewards. It is my fault that I did not read the terms and conditions in detail. But then I realized that initially, you only earn 0.45% cash back. You earn more as your yearly spending increases. I did my round of research and seriously cannot find any other cash back card that works like that. I am looking at the cash rewards amex plus and think I might switch to that card. Having said all that, nothing beats USAA's customer service.

Pros:
1. Great customer service
2. No annual fee
Cons:
1. Cash rewards - starts off low (0.45%) like many have mentioned here.
2. Payment holds for no reason (7 days )
3. I found out when I traveled that Amex is not as widely accepted.
I would suggest their Visa or Mastercard instead

I only found out after I got the card that you get very little cash back at the start of your annual calendar. It starts of at 0.45% (not even 1%). Problem is that but the time I reach the spending requirement, the cash I earn on groceries is really pathetic. Other cash back cards give you 2%, 3% and even 5% right from the get go. The customer service is great. But as a cash back card, this one sucks.

I have always wanted to get an Amex but I kept getting denied. I finally finally managed to get it via USAA. Really happy when I got approved (it was instant) for the USAA cash rewards american express. Score was 645 with EQ and line was $3500.

Ok - so I went on an app spree and got approved for the USAA cash rewards amex. My EQ score was 690 though EXP score was about 750. My credit line was $5000 (which is not bad). During this period, I got approved for Amex BCP ($6000) and Capital One Quicksilver ($5000). Time to go on gardening leave for a while and enjoy using these cards. I figured that if I picked and choose which to use, I will earn a decent cash back.

I already had the USAA Classic Visa but wanted an Amex. So I applied for the Amex Classic over the phone but the customer rep said I could not do it because I already had the Visa version. But I said that I really wanted the Amex version and she suggested this card. I was approved within a minute or so. Glad to finally have a no annual fee card.

One of the things that I really like is the mall.usaa.comm shopping mall where you can earn more points when you shop online through USAA's site. During the holiday season, I earn quite a lot of points from there.

One of the things that you have to be aware of is that the "cash back" is not really cash back. It is given back as a statement credit. My other cash back cards give you a check or even does a direct deposit into your bank account. Will stop using this card because of this.

USAA is supposedly famous for their customer service. Well, IMO, they are over-rated. When I took a vacation to Europe, I told USAA which countries I was going to and they assured me that I could use the card and also get cash advances if we need to.
Well, guess what, our card was declined and when we called, we were told that we did state we would be in Europe but 'security' did not clear. After being transferred to 'security', they first denied it, but then later admit it was their fault. I have never encountered this with my old Amex! So even though this is an "amex", it is nowhere compared to the "real amex" in terms of usability and service.

This card has to have one of the worst tier cash back program. I should have read the terms and conditions in better detail
There are actually three tiers. The lowest being 0.45%. You have to spend like $12k before you earn 1% or so. For things like gas, you earn 1% on top of the tiers. So if you are still in the 0.45% tier, you earn 1.45%. You have to use this card only just to earn some cash back.
But when I look at other cards available from Amex, Chase, Cap One, BOA, Discover, none of them have this tier thing. I would say avoid this card if you really want to max out your cash back.

I have really enjoyed the service provided by USAA and this card has been great. However, I cannot understand how USAA puts a hold on your payment for 10 days for no reason. It happened to me twice and all I was told was that they reserve the right to do so. I have always paid on time and this really bothers me.

I got this card but then regretted that I did not choose another version. Didn't realize that you will only earn .45% cash back for the first $5,000 in annual spending. I have never heard of this before. Even the worst cash back cards started out with 1%.

I have been with USAA for over 10 years and the customer service is top notch. However, I really do not understand why they are offering a cash back card like this. I found out that you could only earn 0.45% initially. Only after spending $10k will you earn 1% cash back. This is ridiculous. I could easily get a Capital One quicksilver and earn 1.5% cash back for everything - plain and simple.

I used to carry a couple of Amex cards, the gold card and the blue cash. After I opened a checking account with USAA and bough some insurance from them, I realized that their customer service is a notch above everyone else. I applied for this card and got a decent limit. I canceled the gold card (because of the annual fee) but kept the Blue Cash.
However, this is now the card I always use.

I applied for this without looking at the cash back rewards. It turns out that you only start of by earning 0.45% and the max is 1.25% after you spend $10000. There are other cards like Capital One Quicksilver that lets you earn 1.25%. So from a reward point of view, this card just does not make the card. I will be canceling soon.

One of the reasons I got this card was because I could earn extra points on grocery. But I disappointed on a couple of things.
1. Walmart is not considered a grocery but instead "retail".
2. Because the cash back starts at 0.45% and I spend only about $400 a month of groceries and I use the card for gas as well, the cash back I earn from those are not what I expected. I could easily earn more cash back from another card.

I have been with USAA for many years and the customer service has been excellent.
However, for the credit card web site, it leaves a lot to be desired. It is hard to find my account number. Categorizing an expense is nearly impossible. The statement includes items that have been paid off.
Surely USAA can go better than that?

I got this card and realized the cash rewards were kind of tiered (you have to spend more to earn more). When I did my calculations, I realized that no matter how much or little I spent, I would be better off with another card. I got the USAA cash back amex plus instead (which I think is much better).
If you are deciding on this card, get the amex plus instead.

This card is okay and you can earn a lot on gas and grocery store purchases. Only thing is it wasn't always accepted when I was overseas. You can get the same card as a Mastercard or visa, which is what I would recommend if you travel (or because of military) are overseas.

5% cash back on gas and 2% on groceries. The cash back really adds up. Also no annual fee. I love this card and have made it the card I use for most of my spending.
