Who are the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association - The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association dates back to 1983 when it was founded by Gary and Marilyn Meadors, who were from Alamo, California. The association was founded because of the founders passion for classic, vintage cars and hot rods. Their first event was a simple "Goodguys get together" at Pleasanton Fairgrounds and it attracted 400 cars. That even kick started the association. According their website1, they have over 70,000 active members worldwide. They organize about 20 events each year across the country. Whereas the first gathering attracted 400 cars, it is not unusual for them to have crowds of 30,000 to 100,000 for their multi day events.
Here are some of the benefits that members get. Firstly, you get to show off your vintage or classic car/s that you own with like minded folks. You also get monthly magazine called the Goodguys Goodtimes Gazatte. Members also get a coffee table size "yearbook", where the associations' entire year's event is captured in photos in the book. As a member, you also get discounts to their events.
Earn Double Points On GoodGuys Event Purchases - The Goodguys "hotrod" Visa card allows you to earn double points when you use the card to purchase and pay for Goodguys events. For other regular purchases, the usual one point per dollar applies.
You can redeem your points for Goodguys merchandise - According to PartnersFirst (the issuer of this card), you can redeem the points you earn for "Valuable Merchandise from top industry parts manufacturers and service providers". Since I do not have this card, I can only presume that you will be given a peek at these rewards when you actually have the card.
Aside from using points for Goodguys merchandise and goods, PartnersFirst also has their standard reward program if you choose to redeem points you earn that way. For example, you can exchange the points you earn for cash back. If you do so, you will be effectively getting 1% cash back. You can also redeem your rewards for travel2, merchandise3 and gift cards4. Their travel rewards is actually quite good. For example, 10,000 points gets you a $100 travel discount. For 20,000 points you can get a roundtrip domestic ticket up to a $275 value. For 25,000 points, the ticket value increase to $350. As points increase, you get incremental value increase. So all in all, you are getting slightly more than 1% back when you redeem your points for airline tickets.
Is the GoodGuys Credit Card Good? - All we would say is that if you are a GoodGuys member and attend their events a lot, then perhaps you should consider getting this card. The main benefit I can see is that you get discounts when you use this card to pay for events (and nowhere on PartnersFirst site or GoodGuys site does it say how much). You could also redeem points for merchandise from parts manufacturers or service providers. Because we could not find any other information on either website, we cannot comment on how good or how many merchants are participating in this program. Hence, we cannot say how good it is.
If you are a member of this association, it means you are likely to own a classic car and are proud of it. Getting this card is perhaps another way of proudly showing your membership with Goodguys. Furthermore, you could actually upload a picture of your own car and use it as the picture on your credit card.
