Executive Summary -
One of the unique travel benefits most Citibank credit cards is that they offer trip cancellation insurance. Aside from that, they also offer the usual perks that come with elite Visa cards. This part of our review examines these features.
While this card is a "Visa" card, the travel benefits appears to be provided by Citi's third party partners and slightly different from Visa or their Signature benefits. These are the following travel benefits of the card.
- Travel Accident Insurance - When you use this card to pay for your travel tickets, you will be covered for $250,000 for travel accidents (which include death, loss of hands, feet or eye sight). This insurance is underwritten by National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, PA. Coverage begins when you travel through public transport to your port of departure and terminates after your transfer from your port of landing.
- Trip Cancellation Insurance - Citi is one issuer whose cards actually have trip cancellation insurance. It is provided by Virginia Surety Company. It is a secondary coverage. And according to Virginia's Surety website, the coverage is for death, sudden illness or accidental injuries.
- Lost Luggage Insurance - This card has a $3,000 common carrier lost luggage insurance policy when you use your card to pay for your tickets. The coverage is limited to a maximum of $10,000 a trip. (Note: For New York residents, the coverage per baggage is up to $2,000)
- Emergency Assistance Service - When you are traveling abroad, and/or have your car breakdown in the middle of nowhere, have had an accident, this feature could possibly come in handy. You, your spouse and your children (as long as they are under the age of 22) can use this service.
Some of the services provided include emergency message service, medical referral services, legal referral services. When I read the fine prints of the legal referral services, I found out that you can seek help with US embassies or consulate abroad if you are detained by local authorities and even make sure bail payment (by the card off course) or personal account is arranged and that it has been properly handled!
Other services include, emergency transportation arrangements, ticket replacements, lost luggage locator, translation services and even prescription delivery.
