Comparing the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Visa with the Blue Cash Everyday from American Express is like comparing apples and oranges. They are just different types of cash back cards.
Unlike the the Chase Freedom or Discover More (which really are the same type of cards as Citi), the American Express is different in that it does not have any rotating categories. It does not really have any noteworthy online shopping portal.
How the Amex Blue Cash Everyday Pays Cash Back
- Like Citi, American Express has a base rate of 1% on regular purchases. But they pay 3% cash back on groceries, 2% cash back on gas and department stores expenses.
Unlike the other rotating category cards, you can earn these extra cash back for the whole year round and not just one quarter.
Because they are so different, it is really difficult to say which is the better card. In fact, one can never arrive at that conclusion. Some folks would prefer Amex because it is relatively simple. With Citi, you would have to remember the rotating categories and activate them every quarter.
Others would prefer the having more categories to earn extra cash back and would also appreciate the fact that the Citi Bonus Cash Center has much more online merchants where you can earn more than 1% cash back.
Many people also combine the Amex Blue Cash Everyday with a card like this one.
