There are more types of reward credit cards that cater to travelers who want to earn reward points for travel rewards, like airline tickets, than other types of credit cards. Different credit cards have different reward programs and they also differ in the way points are earned and redeemed. If you are looking for a reward credit card with travel rewards, I would suggest you first consider the four cards that we highlight
below.
Recommended Travel Credit Credit Cards
The Miles by Discover® Card is a card for those who do not want to be tied down by the usual credit card reward program restrictions such as having to book 14 or 21 days in advance, or having to stay a saturday night. With this card, you can use your own travel agent (online or offline) to book your airline tickets, hotel, cruise or car rentals. You then simply use the miles you have earned to get a statement credit.
The Blue Sky from American Express is pretty much like the Discover Miles Card. With this card, you can use any travel agent (even internet agents) to book your travel arrangements and get the best deal. You then use your points to get a credit on your next statement at a rate of 7,500 points for $100 (ie more than 1%). No blackout dates, no Saturday night stays, no advance booking, stopovers allowed. For the ultimate flexibility, consider this card.
The drawback of having a card like the Discover Miles Card or the Blue Sky is that if your tickets cost more, you have to use more points. If you looking for a regular reward program for tickets and are willing to bear with the restrictions like having to book in advance and staying a saturday night, then I would recommend the Chase Flexible Rewards Visa
It has perhaps the most flexible travel reward program (as its' name suggest). Not only can you redeem points for airline tickets, you can also redeem points specifically for continental airline tickets, exchange points for United Mileage Plus points, Continental Airlines OnePass Points and British Airways points as well. The shopping merchandise and other travel rewards is very good as well.
If you are looking to redeem points for free airlines to Central and South America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, the reward program has the lowest point requirements for these flights..
If you are a United or BA frequent flyer but do not want to pay any annual fee for their credit cards, then this is also the card to get as you can exchange points into miles for these programs.
