Summary - We recommend the Discover® Open Road(SM) Card because you can earn 2% rebates on both gasoline and restaurant purchases for the first $250 in these purchases every month. You can purchase gasoline at any gasoline station. You can also double the value of your cash rebates by exchanging them for gift certificates of partner merchants. This card does have a tiered rebate formula that you should be aware of. Read further to find out more about this card.
Rebate for Gasoline and Auto Maintenance - The Discover Open Road Card allows you to earn 2% rebates for gasoline and restaurant purchase for up to $250 combined gasoline and restaurant spending a month ($3,000 in annual spending). Once you exceed $250 in monthly spending, you will earn similar rebates as your "other purchases".
Rebates on "other purchases" - Cash Back Bonus - For the fist $3,000 in annual spending, you earn 0.25% rebates. You earn 1% rebates for annual spending above $3,000. You can earn unlimited rebates which do not expire.
Shop Discover Card - When you use your Discover card to shop at partner merchants from Discover's website (shopdiscover.com), you will earn anywhere between 5% and 20% discounts. So rather than going directly to the merchants' website, all you have to do is just to login into your account and navigate to the merchant's site from there (it is essentially the same site - but it tracks your purchases made on your Discover Card). Double the value of your rebates - You can also up to double the value of the cash rebates you have earned by exchanging them for over 100 merchant partners gift certificate. That means that a $20.00 rebate can turn into a $40.00 gift certificate. Below is the list of their present partners.
Fees and Rates - The Discover Open Road Card has no annual fee. New cardholders get a 0% Intro APR* for 6 months on Purchases, and 12 months on Balance Transfers* .
Verdict - The Discover® Open Road(SM) Card is an improvement over the regular Discover® More Card because in addition to the great rebates you get from shopdiscover.com merchants, you also earn 2% rebates on gas and restaurant expenses.
