It's strange that one of our recommended credit cards to earn gas rebates would come from one issued by a credit union. But the PenFed Platinum Cash Rewards Card is the only card today that pays 5% cash back on gasoline purchases at any station. When we say at any station, we mean standalone gas stations. That means most nationally recognized brand. Stations like Walmart, Costco and Kroger are not considered standalone stations because that is not their main business.
However, to get this card, you have to jump through a hoop. If you are a member of the military, then you could easily get one. But if you are not, then you have to join one of their organizations (explained in our review) which will cost $15 (one time fee - see our review on how to become a member).
Costco members already know that gas at Costco stations are cheaper than most. But what most do not realize is that if you have cash back card that let's you earn cash back on gas (like the Penfed card above or the Blue Cash), you will not earn any extra cash back because Costco stations are not considered as "standalone". This is where the TrueEarnings® Card from Costco and American Express will help you earn that extra cash back (3%). But best of all, if you go to another national recognized brand station like Shell, BP, Sunoco, you will still earn the 3% cash back. You have to note that Costco gas stations only accepts American Express cards.
