Hi
I travel a lot and am think of whether to get the amex gold card for the membership rewards or the diners club card. Am using them to earn airmiles on a couple of airlines. Am wondering whether membership rewards or diners club rewards is the better card? would appreciate thoughs from anyone who has both these cards. |

I have the amex gold, but have done a little comparison with the Diners Club. In terms of the airline partners, they are similar (same partners). For amex, if you decide not to transfer points to miles but buy an airline ticket and use your membership reward points, then for example, if your ticket cost $125, then you need 12,500 points (same as 1% rebate formula).
For Diners Club, the "rebate formula" if you use points for buying an airline ticket is 1.25%. So, for a $125 ticket, you only need 10,000 points. In this regard, it is slightly better than amex. But I think amex has better non-airline rewards than Diners. When I got my amex years ago, Diners was not bought by Citi yet and was not technically a mastercard. Hence, I went for the amex card. (back then, Diners also had United as an airline partner, while membership rewards did not). |

Like Hardware, I thought about this years ago between amex and diners club. I chose amex because it was more widely accepted than diners (though less than visa or mastercard). Now that diners club is a mastercard (if you do not get the charge version), then I think you should just look at the reward program and see which best fits you.
The amex gold worked for me and I now have the platinum card. |
