Australia bound summer 09

First off, I admit up front that I am smart enough to know that when it comes to airlines miles both collecting them and redeeming them that I am ignorant. So, I am here seeking ***istance. My wife and I are planning to travel to Australia this summer to see our youngest son who is attending the university in Perth. We have one shot at this and I would like very much to maximize our comfort and stay. We have collected over 141,000 miles with our United Visa card. I believe we need 160,00 to cover the flights. I have been reading on line ways of upgrading, spending points on hotels and car rentals. As I said, this will be the big trip in our lives. So any pointers, how to's, point gathering ideas, cost saving plans or simple well wisher notes are welcomed.
