Discover® is one of the major credit card issuers in the market. However, unlike some other major issuers with a whole series of different cards, Discover® has essentially five types of credit cards and they have trimmed their credit card portfolio over time. Many have the same features and the thing that distinguishes Discover® cards is that you can choose from over 150 designs. Most Discover® Cards are hybrid reward credit cards with a combination of cash back and reward features. We will explore them briefly below.
5% rebates on Get More Merchants
- On their flagship Discover® More card and on their Discover®
student card. Discover® offers cardholders 5% rebates when
purchases are made with "Get More Merchant Partners". This
is the only credit card we know that pays 5% rebates on
purchases outside the area of supermarket, gas and pharmacy
purchases. The merchants rotate and vary every month. For
the Platinum Open Road Card and Business Card, 5% rebate is earned when you make gasoline and office supply purchases.
Up to Double your cash rebates - All Discover® cards, except the Miles Card, allow you to exchange cash rebates you have earned for gift certificates of merchant partners (present count is 60). If you do this, the value of gift certificate will be higher than the cash rebate. For certain merchants, you can get double the value of your cash rebates. This is another unique feature of Discover® cards that no one else has.
Below are the main Discover® Cards in their line up.
Discover Cards Line Up
The Discover® More(SM) Card is the flagship card which has both the 5% rebate for Get More Merchant Partners feature and the ability to exchange rebates for gift certificates. Cardholders can also shop at ShopDiscover.com and get discounts from partner merchants. Read our review of the Discover® More(SM) Card.
The Discover® Open Road(SM) Card is the only credit card at the moment that pays you 5% rebates on gasoline purchase at any gas stations without requiring you to spend above any annual spending threshold. Furthermore, you can also earn 5% rebates on auto maintenance purchases. This card also allows you to exchange cash rebates for gift certificates (and potentially double your rebate value). Find out more about the Discover® Open Road(SM) Card.
The Miles by Discover® Card is slightly different from the rest of the line up in that this is a regular travel reward card. You earn miles (one mile for every dollar you spend on the card) and redeem them for travel, shopping and cash rewards. Read our review of the Miles by Discover® Card.
The Discover® Student card is the student version of the Discover More card. It has identical reward features. The thing that makes this card stand out from other student credit cards is its lower than average apr. While almost all student credit cards have a prime rate plus 9.99% apr, this card has it by more than one percentage point lower at prime rate plus 8.99%. The Discover® Business Card pays 5% rebates on office supplies purchases and 2% rebates on gasoline purchases. Like the regular consumer cards, you can exchange cash rebates for gift certificates. This card comes with a 0% apr offer on purchases for 12 months. Read our review of the Discover® Business card
