I have started using my debit card instead of my credit card a year ago and it is the best thing I have ever done.

First, decide on a monthly budget for spending on your credit card. I tend to divide this into necessary and luxury items.

Take a blank check register and enter in your monthly budget for the month at the top (use two sections if using more than one budget) as your beginning balance.

Enter each credit card payment into your check register and subtract from your balance.

Using Quicken or MS Money to track your credit card payments, even daily, doesn't have the impact that seeing your "balance" dwindle to zero does. And when you are out and about buying things, you can look at your balance before you buy.
