Is Discover Card More Accepted Than Amex?
by Mr Credit CardWe have the following question from a reader :
Is the Discover open road credit card accepted everywhere, or is it like Amex, limited to certain places that will accept it.?

John – I was about to write this post about this incident a couple of weeks ago when I got got this question from you in the mail box. I thought I’d answer this with the following story.
During spring break a couple of weeks ago, our family drove to Florida. On the way back along I-95, we stopped to fill our gas and go to the bathroom. As usual, we searched for the lowest gas prices. (I managed to take a few photos – so enjoy them) and we finally settled for the station with the lowest gas price.

Well, it is obvious from the above pictures that RaceWay had the lowest gas prices. So we pulled up and the family went to get snacks. And as I was about to swipe my credit card, lo and behold, they DID NOT ACCEPT AMEX! What! Can’t use my Blue Cash to earn 5% rebates.
But they DID ACCEPT DISCOVER!. Look, I cannot judge by this one incident. But I do know of places that do not accept Amex. Visa and MasterCard are universally accepted. I personally have yet to come across a place that does not accept Discover. But here’s the thing, regardless of whether Discover is more accepted than Amex, the Discover® Open Road® Card is at the moment the best gas credit card because it pays 5% off the bat on gas (though they do cap it at $100 ga spending a month) unlike my Blue Cash which requires $6,500 in annual spending before I get 5% on gas. So, John, if you do not have it already and are thinking about it, just get the Discover Card. I can’t say for sure, they just might be more universally accepted than Amex.
If anyone has any views or experiences to comment on this, we would like to hear from you.
