I would consider locking your credit report a good thing, no matter how many hoops the credit agencies try making you jump through to do it.

Identity theft isn't slowing down at all, in fact it's increasing at an alarming rate. The less information they have, the safer you are.

people still need to be educated though, just locking your credit report won't protect you from social security identity theft, medical insurance identity theft etc:

Jack,

I would freezing the credit report ASAP.
I did it before when someone used my cc to purchase things online. It should not cost any things. I don't have to provide any police report documenting at all. Please check with one of three credit bureans. By freezing one of them will freeze all three.

Also, contact all cc companies & banks of the lost cc/checks. You might also need to report to the local police and ss.

The fact that the theives did not open any new accounts 'yet', does not mean they cannot open it later and perhaps they might had already open it but it is not show up yet.

Just a qucik question. One of my family members had their purse stolen. Everything they owned was in the purse, from credit cards, checks, social security cards, and so on. Now would Freezing their credit report benefit her? Or would freezing them hinder the progress of getting everything straightend out? The theives did not open any new accounts.

Thanks,
