I regularly use Starwood points for greater than 5 cents per point through redemption of cash and points awards. I just stayed at the San Jose Sheraton this past Tuesday night. The regular rate was $179 per night. Cash & Points was $45 + 2,800 Starpoints.

$179 - $45 = $134 off the rate + a savings of 10% room tax
2,800 points saved $147 in cash.
$147/2,800 points = 5.25 cents cash savings per point used for the hotel night.

Two nights ago I was at the Denver Westin Tabor on a Cash & Points stay. My $400 per night suite was $60 + 4,000 points. In this instance my Starwood points were worth over 8 cents each.

In general you will get less value for your Starwood points when redeemed for higher category hotels, but Starwood Hotels Cash & Points payment option tends to offer the highest value return for points redemption.
