I was going over my Amex/Costco statement to pay and noticed that on all the pages including the return coupon payment my account number was replaced with a series of X's the last 5 numbers of my card visible. My Card was in my safe in the back of the closet and I really felt lazy. On the payment coupon it says "Please write account number on Check". What is the point of all the safety/security if I have to place my account number on my check? Yet they don't on my bill?
So I put a series of X's and the last 5 numbers as they did on my check and mailed it off.
Where has deductive reasoning and common sense gone?

You are wrong about redemption on Blue Sky: you don't need to call to book travel through Amex. You can make any qualifying travel purchase (airfare, hotels, rental cars, etc) and request a statement credit afterward against that item. It's even more flexible than you make it sound, since you don't have to book with Amex travel.
