Citi ThankYou Premier Review

by Mr Credit Card

Citi ThankYou(SM) Premier The Citi ThankYou® Premier Rewards Card is Citi’s new card that is replacing the old PremierPass Card. It has similar features and is actually card for those looking for a travel rewards credit card. Let’s find out more about this card.

Rewards Formula – The Citi ThankYou(SM) Premier Card allows the cardholder to earn one point for every dollar that you spend on the card. You can earn 1.2 points for every dollar you spend at gas stations, supermarkets and drugstores. But the distinguishing feature of this card is that you can earn one ThankYou Flight Point for every miles that you fly (from departure origin to destination) if you use this card to purchase your airline ticket. That means you can rack up points pretty quickly if you fly a lot.

Sign Up Bonus – New cardholders will get 30,000 bonus points after spending $1,500 after 3 months.

Anniversary Bonus – At the end of each Citi ThankYou Card account membership year you will also earn an Anniversary Bonus calculated as a percentage of ThankYou Points earned from purchases during that membership year (your membership year begins the date you become a Citi ThankYou cardmember and resets each year on that date) as follows:

Domestic Companion Ticket and 15% Airline Tickets – Cardholders also get an annual complementary domestic airline ticket. You will also get a 15% discount off your airline ticket when you it through Citi’s travel benefits provider, Spirit Incentives.

Annual Fee – The annual fee for this card is $125 (waived for the first year) and the fee for additional cardholder is $50.

One Fine Print To Be Aware Of – Cardholders have to be aware that the the points you earn from the miles you fly are called ThankYou Flight Points. Citi will only transfer ThankYou Flight Points into your account only if you have earned an equivalent of ordinary ThankYou Points. This is to prevent folks from just using this card solely for travel.

Verdict – This card will suit those who really fly a lot and those who travel abroad. If you use a normal credit card rewards card, then, you cannot earn “double miles”. Well, here is where this card shines. While you cannot earn “double miles”, you can earn points based on the miles you fly. In most cases, this will be much more than the price of the tickets. Hence, when you fly, you earn miles from the miles you fly with your frequent flyer program and also your credit card. You can use your frequent flier miles when it makes sense, and also use your ThankYou Flight Points when that makes sense. You also get a free domestic companion ticket every year (which is nice) and also a 15% discount when you use Spirit Travel to book your flights. To top it off, there is no foreign transaction fee as well.

You have to be a decently heavy user of the card and also fly a lot to benefit from the card. But if the above describes you, then the Citi ThankYou® Premier Rewards Card is a card you would seriously want to consider.

Thanks for the review since I have the PremierPass card. One question about the “fine print” point you mentioned in this post. Is there a way to tell if you have pending flight points so that you know how many more purchases to make them equivalent?

  2. Mr Credit Card Says:

    Eric

The distance (miles flown) is based on the numbers provided by OAG Worldwide. So if you find out the miles you will fly from there, it should reflect the “Flight Points” you have earned.

  3. Nancy Brophy Says:

I am not a frequent traveler but when I fly I would like the option of using different airlines. What do you suggest?
