[...] But then the question becomes why do we always increase our discretionary spending when our income goes up or if things feel better? Why do we not think about always being frugal? Mrs Credit Card and myself are always wrestling on this issue. For example, one of my goals is to pay off my mortgage as fast as I can. But I would also like to fund my retirement much earlier. While I have started putting extra money aside a month to pay off principal on my house, I have also recently just bought a new Lexus. I have noticed that we each out more often when our income goes up. I think part of the problem is that deep down inside, we always have a dream as to our ideal lifestyle. So a couple of nights ago, I sat down and took down some notes as to how I want my lifestyle to be if I had all the money I wanted. [...]

Peter

just ask the dealer - (more like the cashier). I'm sure they will most definitely allow you to charge on your credit card.

I will look into the convenience checks, but don't this this card has ever offered fee-free checks. Also, not sure if I will get the reward points (which is the whole point of putting it on a credit card).

Peter: Simply use ( request them if you have to ) the "convenience checks" that credit card companies are so fond of sending out. If, that is, the CC company will waive the fee for using them. Can't hurt to ask, if the dealer has an issue with the CC downpayment.

You mentioned that you used a credit card to buy a car. I am buying a car later this month and was planning to use a reward card for the downpayment of about $10-15,000. This is after I have negotiated a rock-bottom price. I've been wondering if the dealer will balk at that, since it will probably cost them around $300 is fees (assuming 3%). Did you have any problems?
