This card it totaly worth it. This card is not worth the cost.
Most travel can be booked at a lower cost elsewhere. Also true for hotel rooms.
In China, AmEx travel was not able to help us with an airline ticket change on Delta airlines, even though it was booked by AmEx.
The hours to contact International Travel are limited so calls from another country have to be adjusted to US time.
Even though I call ahead to confirm use of the card abroad, it is often refused. I cannot count on AmEx accepting the charge even though they agreed to it.
I called to confirm a very large credit purchase to be made the next day. Although the agent agreed it was fine to make the large purchase, it was denied at the store. I called and they wanted pre-payment. I have had the card for 10 years and have never once missed a monthly payment in full.
I keep getting enticed by a few of the benefits, but it is time to realize they are not benefits that are available only through AmEx. The card in unreliable, the service is not consistent (get different responses from different customer service agents), and the benefits are available for free from other sources.
it is time to say good-bye to AmEx Platinum.

If I upgrade to Platinum and my wife stays with the Gold, how do they calculate the membership points? Will we have separate Membership Rewards Programs or will they roll up to the existing program?

Since Amex is not accepted by many merchants abroad, I think it is worth mentioning that the 3% savings in foreign trans fees can only partially materialize. Since this was the biggest single potential benefit for me, I think I will reconsider.

What other cards exist without foreign trans fee?

I cannot say enough good stuff about this card. I will outline how I have used it so that the true value of the card can be measured. If people took the time to really look into their benefits and use them they would not be complaining.

1.Airline lounges. Most lounges are available Including US Airlines which is incorrectly stated above. In addition AmEx offers Priority Pass Select for Free which includes almost all others and International. I don’t agree with the prior comment that I would rather sit in the Newark gate than go to the lounge. All lounges have quiet areas you can go to with no “drunks” and Kids.

2.Global Entry. This is a Gov. Program allows you to enter the US by swiping your passport and getting a ticket bypassing all lines. It cost $100.00 which AmEx pays for you.

3.Baggage fee paid up to $200.00 per year on your selected airline.

4.I used the travel service to get a premium hotel in London, Paris and Rome all were discounted at least 20% cheaper than anyplace online and I got an immediate room upgrade at no charge. Also got dinner\lunch and Spa credits at each hotel worth about $100.00 per stay. They saved me over $2000.00 on that trip alone.

5.The travel service booked all my train travel in Europe, which can be a real hassle. They also book all my transfers from the airport and train station and hotels.

6.I had the concierge’s service research restaurants that would meet my likes with specific times. They emailed me choices the next day and booked what I wanted with a simple email reply.

7.No exchange fee for charges internationally. That saves 3% and adds up quickly.

8.All the Shopping program benefits: extended warranty, return protection, Purchase protection. Use them once and the card is paid for 10 years.

11.I have charged from $2000.00 a month to $50,000.00 when I pay my kids college (nice because the schools don’t add a fee and I get points), I have never once had my card stopped or been told I was over any limit.

As far as the Travel people at AmEx I could not be happier with the service, they are very nice on the phone and work hard to get me everything I need. I know it sounds like a commercial but it’s a free service that I use all the time and really find great value in it.
If you travel and use premium services this is the card for you.

Just one comment about the International Airline Program on AMEX Platinum. In most cases it is useless; you have to pay more than double (I’ve seen it as much as 5x) the standard rate for a qualifying ticket in order to use the program to get a second seat, plus add applicable taxes. It was obviously cheaper just to book the two standard seats and recognize this program for the joke that it is.

I’ve had the Platinum card for more than twenty years and love it. On one occasion someone got my card number and charged over $12,000 to my account in one day (they bought a lot of computers). One call to AMEX and they solved the problem. On two other occasions my card number was used in locations where I had never visited. Both times the charges were relatively small, just over $350 and again, AMEX to the rescue. On yet another occasion my wife had her purse stolen on a bus in Istanbul. One phone call and within sixteen minutes the card was cancelled and six hours later she had a hew card, delivered to her hotel by AMEX. One more: I arrived in Iceland for a salmon fishing trip but my bags didn’t. Four hours later my bags were located in another country but could not be forwarded to me for another twelve hours. AMEX told me to buy what ever I needed and they would pay, which I did and they did. I could go on but will stop and say that the fee for the card is money well spent.

Just wondering about the complaints that people are posting about being able to spend only a x-percentage of their total credit limit. What card do you have? Clearly it isn’t a Green, Gold, or Platinum Card. None of those cards have a pre-set spending limit, nor will they ever tell you that you have a specific credit limit. People confuse no pre-set limit to unlimited limit. Your particular limit may change month-to-month based on your most recent credit history and any other metrics Amex uses to determine risk analysis. I am a long time Platinum Card holder and have nothing but praise for it and the customer service provided. And lastly, if you have to take a minute to decide if a $450 fee is “worth” it then it’s probably not the card for you.
