Cardholders Review of the Aer Lingus Shamrock Mastercard

Date :5th March 2006
First Name: patricia
Which credit card are you reviewing?: aerlingus
How long have you had this card?: 5-10 years
Rewards and Benefits: Poor - not happy, looking for a new card perhaps.
Cost and Fees: Excellent - no annual fee and low apr
Customer Service: Good - resolved my questions and inquiries promptly and politely
Comments : I think that the amount that you have to spend in order to get a ticket on Aerlingus is astrinomical. I would like to see Aerlingus, make available, a rewards system that you can apply the points you have to a ticket. Not have to spend $40,000.00 to get an Eight hundred dollar ticket. Or to be able to give the points to someone in Ireland to use.
Would you recommend this card?: No

Date :11th Aug 2005
First Name: Barbara
Which credit card are you reviewing?: MBNA Shamrock Rewards
How long have you had this card?: 2-3 years
Rewards and Benefits: Poor - not happy, looking for a new card perhaps.
Cost and Fees: Good - no annual fee and moderate apr
Customer Service: Average - they were ok
Comments : I am disappointed that one needs 30,000 points for one r/t fare from U.S> to Ireland. I am further disappointed to learn that there are 'upgrades' from Business to First Clas only.. There is no Business Class on Aer Lingus. Business/First are all the same. What would be appealing to me is a card where I can purchase a ticket and be upgraded, using a moderate amount of points (say 20, 000)

Date :25th June 2005
First Name: Margaret Vinton
Which credit card are you reviewing?: Aer Lingus Shamrock Rewards Mastercard
How long have you had this card?: 2-3 years
Rewards and Benefits: Excellent - I really make use of them
Cost and Fees: Excellent - no annual fee and low apr
Customer Service: Average - they were ok
Comments : On June 22 2005, I made a reservation for Aug 24 2005 CHI/DUB roundtrip. At this point I have no e-mail to confirm my trip (have the required points, 40,000) and you do not seem to be able to get it to me. I HAVE NO TICKET. Can you rectify this please? If this is not resoved I will have to take further action and I cannot recommend this card at this point, up to this, I would have.

Editor's Comment - I'm a little surprised to hear that cardholders not happy that you need 40,000 points for a trip to Ireland. For almost all US airlines and credit card reward programs, you need 25,000 miles or points for a roundtrip ticket within the Continental US. For a roundtrip ticket to Europe, you need 50,000 for most programs. Hence, 40,000 miles requirements seems good to me. Furthermore, if you use any other credit card reward program or US airlines program, you may not even get a direct flight to Dublin.

But if you really want to use less points for a trip to Ireland, then you might want to consider the Citi® Diamond Preferred® Rewards Card. You need to earn 50,000 points for a flight to Europe. But this card allows you to earn 5 points for every dollar you spend at standalone supermarkets, gasoline stations and drugstores. That means you need only spend $10,000 on the card on these items to get you a roundtrip ticket to Europe. That is equivalent to spending over $800 a month on groceries and gasoline to earn your free ticket within a year.
